Plate Measurement
Utilizing the light-sectioning principle, a laser plane is projected onto the moving plate. A camera acquires the image of the resulting line of projection, which is used to determine a local section profile of the object. The complete surface is reconstructed from multiple, sequentially acquired section profiles. This information enables the overall curvature (i.e., planarity and bowing) and local defects (i.e., bumps and cavities) to be analysed.
The measurement and classification can be carried out in real time: For high resolution 500 images per second are taken. The plates can be measured either while in motion or stationary.
The system can be integrated into linear stripping machines or stripping carrousels. The measuring equipment is adjusted to the actual conditions and specific requirements, taking into consideration parameters like the movement speed and the plate size, as well as the available space.

Tracking System
Anode and cathode tracking enables cathode quality problems to be traced back to the specific tankhouse operations and corresponding anodes. To provide monitoring, a type of barcode is attached to the anodes and/or cathodes. The laser measurement system can be integrated in such a tracking system: A second camera is used to read the bar code information. Thereby, information about the cathode quality, cathode blank, and anode are linked.
Automated Visual Inspection
Bad performance arising from stainless steel cathodes is not only caused by geometrical issues, but also results from surface defects that lead to locally decreased conductivity: These are normally visible as black spots on the cathode surface. In these areas, the electrodeposition process is hindered and consequently cathode quality is negatively affected. METTOP ITT can provide a visual inspection system that enables black spots to be detected. This system can also be coupled with the laser surface measurement system for comprehensive stainless steel cathode quality control.
