Rapid but systematic cooling of Al-alloy ingots with ILTEC
At the moment the fields of application for the ILTEC Technology are further widened, at the Montanuniversität Leoben, Chair of Nonferrous Metallurgy.
In order to create defined amounts and distribution of precipitation phases in different aluminum alloys, lab scale tests are performed in the labs of the Montanuniversität. With our small ILTEC test facility, the Al-alloy ingots are casted at different cooling rates realized by modification of the mould preheating temperatures and the heat removal with the ILTEC facility. By precise temperature measurements within the casted ingot piece and a subsequent microscopic analyses and mechanical testing, the optimized cooling conditions can be defined.
Industrial scale implementation of these test results can lead to improved process routes and finally to better qualities of casted aluminum products.
Implementation of a parallel flow device in a pickling tank
In September 2018, a new and innovative approach to the use of the parallel flow device (PFD) was implemented at voestalpine BÖHLER Bleche GmbH & Co KG in Mürzzuschlag, Austria. Altogether, the installation comprises of three elements for improving the performance in the pickling tank and saving hydrofluoric acid.
For a better movement and thus optimised
kinetics of the pickling process, the acid circulates through a series of
nozzles via a parallel flow device at the top end of the tank. This provides a
perfectly guided flow to ensure a more homogeneous acid distribution.
In order to prevent the overheating of the acid, the steam injection is circumvented by the implementation of an instantaneous heating unit. This ensures a constant but adjustable temperature in the entire tank.
As another benefit resulting from the circulation of the acid, a filtering unit is installed at the intake socket of the pump. This filtering unit can be removed and the suspended solids collected in the filter can be removed periodically.

With the overall aim to save time for pickling, safe hydrofluoric acid by temperature control and filtering unit and safe costs by stop using the steam generator, we are convinced to set new standards in pickling units together with voestalpine BÖHLER Bleche GmbH & Co KG.

This introduction to risk management in copper metallurgy allows to understand the fundamentals and principals of risk analysis for the copper production process. IL-B2001 - Decrease of minimum operational temperature to -10 °C
Recent R&D development could now distinctly lower the crystallization temperature of IL-B2001 for ensuring a minimum operational temperature of -10 °C.
However, the real crystallization temperature is well below - 30 °C.
The new additives makes an operation in cold environment possible without additional heating elements and diminishes the need of insulation of piping and components.
ILTEC COOLING IN CONVERTER TUYERE ZONE
Revolutionary approach for significant lifetime extension
For our customer we designed a special copper cooler for tuyere cooling which is going to be installed for cooling altogether six tuyeres in the middle section of the converter tuyere lining. The cooler is based on the design of a CFM (composite furnace module) cooling element, in this case comprising of two individual copper parts connected with a steel construction. In between the copper parts, the AlCr-tuyere bricks are inserted and in the final construction stage the castable refractory mass in casted upon the copper fingers.
The ILTEC Technology, with the non-explosive and safe ionic liquid (IL-B2001) as a coolant media, guarantees best cooling performance in a safe manner whereby the special construction of the copper cooler and the copper fingers provide superior cooling of the AlCr-tuyere bricks and the surrounding area.
The first test assembly will go in operation in June 2018 for one of our customers from the copper industry.

customer is finally ready for shipping
The newly constructed ILTEC facility is equipped with four individual cooling lines which enables the cooling of large areas and applications. Furthermore the cooling capacity of the two heat exchangers of 1.500 kW each and the pumping capacity of 50 m3/h guarantee the appropriate removal of larger heat amounts.
The construction is designed as two individual installation racks (as seen in the construction drawing and the picture) for making both the transport and the installation on site more easy and flexible. As a special feature, the installation of a high-performance instantaneous heater makes the system not only capable of cooling but also enables heating and temperature keeping within the cooler.
Gas purging for improving performace
In order to improve the efficiency of different types of furnaces in metallurgy, Mettop offers various gas purification systems. The system consists of a set of rinsing elements, such as porous plugs, the corresponding closing system for the furnace steelworks, and a gas regulating unit.
The scope of services comprises of optimisation solutions in the area of furnace integrity, combining refractory selection and layout, gas purging systems and cooling elements. In the field of hydrometallurgy, a new electrolysis technology - the METTOP-BRX Technology - was developed and is in operation to allow an acceleration of the electrolytic refining of up to 50 percent. For all metallurgical aggregates and equipment, Mettop developed the new and water-free cooling technology ILTEC, that uses an ionic liquid as cooling medium, to create new pathways towards safe and efficient cooling for the entire metallurgical industry.
In addition, Mettop is internationally active in terms of technical consulting (process optimisation) and operator training for customers in the non-ferrous metals industry, and also assists in the optimisation of risk management in metallurgical plants.
