Faces of Metallurgy
Interview of Dr. Martina Hanel as start of the interview series "Faces of Metallurgy".
With the aim of giving young people more insights about the job description and the daily business of a metallurgist, the Department of Metallurgy at the Montanuniversität Leoben started an interview series with well-known people of this profession. The "Faces of Metallurgy" should prevent stereotypes in terms of metallurgy being dirty and dangerous and should act as an inspiration for pupils and students.
Special thanks to Birgit Hechtl for the interview,

Join our Seminar „Copper Extractive Metallurgy”
which takes place from 27th to 29th of November in Leoben, Austria.
This introduction to risk management in copper metallurgy allows to understand the fundamentals and principals of risk analysis for the copper production process. The seminar focuses on the process routes from the concentrate to the refined copper cathode. Participants will be able to understand the links between different technical parameters and their influence on the risk matrix. Key performance indicators and a cost/risk analysis for different process steps will be discussed regarding their risk influence.

IL-B2001 - Decrease of minimum operational temperature to -10 °C
Recent R&D development could now distinctly lower the crystallization temperature of IL-B2001 for ensuring a minimum operational temperature of -10 °C.
However, the real crystallization temperature is well below - 30 °C.
The new additives makes an operation in cold environment possible without additional heating elements and diminishes the need of insulation of piping and components.
ILTEC COOLING IN CONVERTER TUYERE ZONE
Revolutionary approach for significant lifetime extension
For our customer we designed a special copper cooler for tuyere cooling which is going to be installed for cooling altogether six tuyeres in the middle section of the converter tuyere lining. The cooler is based on the design of a CFM (composite furnace module) cooling element, in this case comprising of two individual copper parts connected with a steel construction. In between the copper parts, the AlCr-tuyere bricks are inserted and in the final construction stage the castable refractory mass in casted upon the copper fingers.
The ILTEC Technology, with the non-explosive and safe ionic liquid (IL-B2001) as a coolant media, guarantees best cooling performance in a safe manner whereby the special construction of the copper cooler and the copper fingers provide superior cooling of the AlCr-tuyere bricks and the surrounding area.
The first test assembly will go in operation in June 2018 for one of our customers from the copper industry.
ILTEC cooled tuyere zone in converters - a game changer in copper refining
Poly TBRC - Latest generation of copper refining and smelting process
For our customers in Germany and Russia the PolyTBRC is in latest stage of construction
The installation of this special TBRC converter, as a joint
project of PolyMet Solutions, SMS group, Urban Gold and Mettop, will allow our
customer to increase the recycling capacity of copper scrap whilst, at the same
time, improving process quality, efficiency, and safety.
The benefits for our customers when installing of a PolyTBRC can be highlighted:
Improved heat transfer and reaction kinetics in refining and smelting processes.
The oxygen/gas-combustion system produces an intense, stable and compact flame with very efficient heat transfer capabilities and low exhaust volume flow.
Lambda values can be adjusted over a wide range to produce reducing, neutral or oxidizing conditions.
High ration of metals recovery and flexible process performance with good slag-metal separation.
ILTEC cooled lance for injection purposes.
We are looking forward to hearing from you if there are any
questions or you need more information regarding our PolyTBRC.
ILTEC System ready for Installation
ILTEC facility for Spanish
customer is finally ready for shipping
The newly constructed ILTEC facility is equipped with four individual cooling lines which enables the cooling of large areas and applications. Furthermore the cooling capacity of the two heat exchangers of 1.500 kW each and the pumping capacity of 50 m3/h guarantee the appropriate removal of larger heat amounts.
The construction is designed as two individual installation racks (as seen in the construction drawing and the picture) for making both the transport and the installation on site more easy and flexible. As a special feature, the installation of a high-performance instantaneous heater makes the system not only capable of cooling but also enables heating and temperature keeping within the cooler.
